Design Story
This one-of-a-kind ring is built around the mysterious, dark appearance of a natural star diopside. Its deep brown-black colour has a warm undertone that works especially well with yellow gold, while the four-rayed star introduces a changing point of light across the surface of the cabochon. We kept the setting open and direct, using only three leaf-shaped prongs to hold the stone. Their asymmetrical rhythm adds a noticeable point of interest without distracting from the diopside itself. The finished ring has a strong presence, but its character comes from the gemstone rather than from excess detail: dark colour, a moving star, warm gold, and a setting made specifically around the proportions of this individual stone.
Gemstone Details
- 1 natural round cabochon star diopside, 8.50 ct, black to dark brown colour, VS clarity, GIA Type II; four-rayed star.
Metal, Setting and Wearability
The ring is handmade in solid 14K yellow gold and weighs 6.50 gr. It measures approximately 13.50 mm in diameter, giving the star diopside a substantial presence on the hand. Three leaf-shaped prongs hold the round cabochon and create an open frame around its dark surface. Because star diopside has more moderate durability than sapphire or diamond, the ring is best worn with reasonable care and protected from hard knocks.
This one-of-a-kind creation is available in size 6½ in our showroom and is ready for immediate shipping. A different size may be possible; please contact us for details.
Gemmologist’s Note
Star diopside is recognised by its dark green, brown, or nearly black body colour and the four-rayed star that appears under a direct light source. The asterism is created by naturally aligned inclusions within the gemstone, and the cabochon cut allows that optical effect to be seen across the rounded surface. Its unusual appearance makes star diopside especially interesting to gemstone collectors and people who enjoy less familiar natural stones. This example was chosen for its substantial size, distinctive dark colour, and clearly recognisable four-ray pattern.
