14K Gold Natural Star Ruby Ring

Design Story

This ring was designed to elevate the natural star ruby within a clean, modern structure. Rather than surrounding the stone with additional detail, we created a fine line frame of yellow gold around the round cabochon and raised the setting above the finger so the ruby’s smooth dome and six-rayed star remain the centre of attention. The frame gives definition to the stone without enclosing it visually, creating a sculptural profile that feels contemporary while respecting the traditional cabochon cut used for star gemstones. We chose this ruby for its colour and the character created by its natural inclusions. Under direct light, the star moves across the surface, giving the ring an appearance that changes as it is worn.

Gemstone Details

• 1 natural round cabochon star ruby, 7.33 ct, 10.50 mm diameter; purplish-red colour with a six-rayed star.

Metal, Setting and Wearability

The ring is handmade in solid 14K yellow gold and weighs 3.35 gr. A fine gold frame follows the round outline of the ruby, while the raised setting allows the cabochon to sit clearly above the finger and shows the stone’s full domed profile. The simple structure keeps the substantial 10.50 mm ruby visually open and gives the ring a bold presence without introducing unnecessary ornament.

Gemmologist’s Note

Star ruby is a variety of corundum in which fine, naturally aligned inclusions create asterism. When the stone is cut as a cabochon and viewed under a direct light source, those inclusions produce the characteristic six-rayed star that moves across the dome. Inclusions are therefore not simply tolerated in a star ruby; they are essential to the optical effect and contribute to the individuality of each stone. This ruby was selected for the combination of its colour, visible star, substantial size, and the natural character held within the stone.
