Ametrine Ring: A Truly One-Off Creation

A Truly One-Off Creation

Every so often, we’re given a stone so unusual in size, in cut, in presence that it inspires a kind of excitement that can only come from the freedom to create. This recent commission is exactly that: a bold, joyful, custom gold ring centred around a spectacular ametrine, made for a long-time client who loves jewellery not just for its value, but for the sheer fun and uniqueness it brings into her life.

This client is no stranger to our studio. Over the years, she’s brought us pieces to reimagine, gems to experiment with, and ideas to explore. Her pieces aren’t about following trends they’re personal, expressive, and delightfully bold. When she came to us with a large, uniquely faceted ametrine and told us to “just have fun with it,” we knew this was going to be a special project.

The gemstone in question was a cushion-shaped ametrine, naturally occurring mix of amethyst and citrine, cut with unusual concave pavilion facets. The way it played with light, colour, and depth made it unlike anything we’d worked with before. It shimmered with soft purples and warm golds, changing tone as it moved, as though it couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be fiery or cool.

And the best part? There were no constraints. No Pinterest boards. No saved inspiration photos. She told us, simply: “Make it interesting — and make it mine.”

Designing with Freedom and Trust

When someone gives us this level of freedom, it’s usually because there’s a foundation of trust that’s been built over time. In this case, we understood her taste well. She enjoys clean, modern forms with a strong presence not cluttered, not overly ornate. And even when a piece is simple, it must have personality.

We began by creating a solid silver prototype a 3D mock-up that allowed us to explore proportion and feel. The stone was large and deserved a setting that gave it structure without overwhelming it. After testing a few concepts, we came back to a classic, functional form: a double-prong basket setting, scaled up to match the size of the stone. The effect was bold and architectural, but not heavy; it gave the stone room to shine.

But something was needed.

An Improvised Touch of Colour

During a fitting session with the silver model, we placed the ring on her finger and began discussing the gallery, the space beneath the stone that’s usually hidden in most designs. We saw an opportunity to add an unexpected element, a little flash of colour.

Almost instinctively, we reached for small round-cut citrines and amethysts, laying them out along the open gallery under the centre stone. The idea was to create a detail that would echo the bi-colour nature of the ametrine — a playful surprise within an otherwise classic setting.

Our client lit up with the idea, and without hesitation suggested we alternate the side stones differently on each side of the ring: amethysts on one side, citrines on the other. It worked beautifully, another way of making this piece unmistakably hers.

Making It in Gold

With the design now fully realised, we moved on to final production in solid 18K yellow gold. The warmth of the metal complemented the golden hues of the ametrine, while contrasting gently with the violet, a natural harmony that made everything feel intentional and fluid.

Setting a stone of this size is always a delicate task. Larger gems can be more temperamental, especially those with fancy pavilion cuts like this one. But the result was more than worth the extra care. The final ring had presence, balance, and movement, not just visually, but emotionally. It looked like it belonged to someone who doesn’t shy away from bold statements, who values individuality over convention.

The Client’s Reaction

The best part of custom work is seeing a client light up when they try on their finished piece for the first time, and that’s exactly what happened here. The ring was everything she had hoped for: large, eye-catching, and fun. “It’s perfect,” she said, beaming. “This is exactly what I imagined, even though I didn’t know what I imagined!”

It matched her personality to a tee: unapologetically bold, a little offbeat, but elegant in its execution. That kind of synergy between client, design, and execution only happens when there’s mutual trust and creative freedom on both sides.

Reflections on the Work

Creating this ring reminded us why we love what we do. We aren’t just here to make jewellery that looks pretty, we’re here to create pieces that speak to people, that reflect their energy, taste, and stories.

Working with a stone like this, something truly unusual, is always a pleasure. But what makes it even more meaningful is the relationship we’ve built with this client over time. When someone feels comfortable enough to say, “I trust you, surprise me,” that’s the greatest compliment we can receive as goldsmiths.

And it’s also a reminder: jewellery can, and should, be fun. It can be large. It can be loud. It can break the rules.

A Note for Fellow Gem Lovers

If you’ve been holding onto a unique gemstone, something you picked up on your travels, inherited, or fell in love with but haven’t known what to do with, don’t let it sit in a drawer. There’s a way to turn it into something beautiful, wearable, and entirely yours.

Whether it’s an ametrine, a rare-cut tourmaline, or just a stone that speaks to you for reasons you can’t quite explain, we’d love to help bring it to life.
